Campus Safety Steering Group

The Campus Safety Steering Group was formed in 2023 to oversee safety on campuses throughout the West Virginia University System.

The group is tasked with enhancing the safety and well-being of our campus communities by continually evaluating and enhancing safety initiatives, community outreach and engagement, training opportunities and communication. Sub-Groups

Four specifically tasked sub-groups bring ideas and needs to the Campus Safety Steering Group which makes recommendations to the University through the University Planning Council.

The sub-groups include:

  1. Campus Carry
  2. On-Campus Safety
  3. Morgantown Partnership
  4. Communications

Campus Carry Sub-Group

Responsibilities Chair Members

The Campus Carry sub-group is charged with reviewing the requirements of Senate Bill 10, the Campus Self-Defense Act, on higher education institutions. It will make recommendations to the steering committee and engage stakeholders in the decision-making process. It will meet on a regular basis as the University approaches the July 1, 2024 deadline.

Specific items the sub-group addresses include:

  • Make recommendations for WVU's campuses (Morgantown, Keyser, Beckley and Health Sciences)
  • Create a timeline for implementation
  • Project expenses for implementing the law
  • Develop communication needs for campus and the community

On-Campus Safety Sub-Group

Responsibilities Chair Members

The On-Campus Safety sub-group works to identify safety concerns on WVU campuses and develop solutions and best practices to address those concerns. This group communicates frequently with the campus community on projects and next steps.

  • Campus safety protocols
  • Blue lights
  • Pedestrian and driver safety
  • Preparedness and trainings
  • Safety resources

Morgantown Partnership Sub-Group

Responsibilities Co-Chairs Members

The Morgantown Partnership sub-group will work with the City of Morgantown to identify safety concerns for the downtown area, as well as other areas in Morgantown. This group will identify ways the University can work in partnership with various Morgantown leaders and agencies to develop solutions, as well as work with various Morgantown leaders and agencies to assist with community development projects.

Specific items the sub-group addresses include:

  • Improvement of safety in downtown Morgantown (specifically High Street, Spruce Street and Chestnut Street)
  • Communication and marketing needs

Communications Sub-Group

Responsibilities Chair Members

The Communications sub-group develops strategic communications to educate the campus community on the progress of the Campus Safety Group and related sub-groups, as well as develop campus safety messaging to be shared throughout the academic year. This group also will work with external communication teams such as local municipalities to create shared messaging when appropriate.

Specific items the sub-group addresses include:

  • Communication and marketing plans to assist other sub-groups
  • Frequent updates to safety.wvu.edu
  • Consistent messaging on general safety tips and protocols
  • Consistent messaging on how to report safety concerns
